Admission
Admission Procedure
Being a ''Sarvajanik'' and 'grant-in-aid College' and the most preferred Science College of the university, we are supposed to give equal opportunities to the students of all the sections of the society seeking admissions to our college. Therefore, all the admission at all the stages is given strictly on the merit basis i.e. on the basis of percentage of marks which students have obtained at the qualifying exam for the respective programme. We have absolutely transparent policy for creating access to (a) disadvantaged community (b) women (c) physically disabled (d) economically weaker sections of the society and (e) sports person. This policy is determined by the university/state government and we scrupulously follow it.
As mentioned above ours is the most preferred college of the university and therefore, every year on average we receive three times more applications for the first year than the actual number of seats available.
So far as an admission to the PG programmes is concerned it is given by are given by the university. For the PG Programmes also our college is next to the PG department of the V. N. South Gujarat University centre and the cut-off percentage points for admission to these programmes also remain very high. For example, last year for the open category the cut-off percentage point for PG programmes in Chemistry and Botany were 70.78 % and 62 % respectively.
Library as Learning Resources
The details of the number of books / journals / periodicals that have been added to the central library during the last three years and their costs are as follows:
Computers as Learning Resources:
Our college does extend computer facilities to the faculties as well as to the students. Though we do not have the central computing facilities, all the Departments have computers of their own. The responsibility of maintaining the computers and accessories is given to the computer consultant.
Other Facilities: (Hostel, Health care, Councelling & Placement cell, Sports, etc.) Earlier ours was the only science college in South Gujarat area. In those days more than 50% of the students used to stay in the hostel. However, during last four decades, many science colleges have been established in this area. Therefore, the ratio of the students seeking hostel accommodation has gone down-drastically. However, even today we have about 30 students who stay in the hostel. Therefore, the percentage of our students utilizing hostel facilities is about 3% approximately. However, it may also be noted that to fill up the surplus hostel accommodation, we have extended this facility also to the students of other colleges of our management. If these students are taken into account, about 300 students are utilizing this facility.
We do not have hostel facility for girls but whenever there is a requirement, it is fulfilled by accommodating such students at the girl’s hostel of our sister college - M. T. B. Arts College, which is located in the same campus. Presently 10 female students of our college are given accommodation in the hostel.
In our hostel we have 150 rooms. There are 24 bathrooms and 22 toilets/urinals. We also have in-house facility for lunch and dinner for our students. Besides outdoor sports, we also have facilities for recreation which is consisted of Table tennis, Carom, Chess and a Common room with T. V. We also have medical facilities for these students.
We have already set up a “Health Centre” in the campus and the details regarding the extension services will be worked out soon.
We do not have any formal structure like the employment cell or the placement centre for offering career counselling to the students. However, every year a senior teacher is entrusted with this responsibility. Whenever, there is a formal advertisement or a request received from an industry, the professor - in - charge duly brings it to the notice of the students of the third year and the PG classes. If required, we also provide the logistic support to the recruiters when they come for campus recruitment. For the last two years Dr. P. H. Desai, Department of Chemistry has been acting as the co-ordinator for these activities.
We have a full-time lecturer for physical education. We also have a very big play-ground where various sports activities are carried out. The available outdoor sports facilities are cricket, basket ball, volley ball, kho-kho and kabaddi. Except cricket, all these facilities are extended to female students too. So far as indoor sports like badminton, table tennis, carom, chess etc. are concerned, these facilities are extended separately to girls as well as to boys. For this, we have separate common rooms for girls and boys where these facilities, except badminton, are available.
